UK Café Spotted Charging Extra For Cow’s Milk In Hot Drinks

Leading Instagram account Vegan Food UK says ‘if cafés see that others are charging extra for dairy, then maybe others will follow

Acafé in the UK is charging customers extra for ordering cow’s milk in hot drinks, according to Vegan Food UK.

Vegan Food UK is an online organization sharing vegan food news, reviews, vlogs, and more. It operates across multiple social media platforms, with a Facebook group, Facebook page, YouTube channel, and Instagram account.

Cow’s milk surcharge

It posted a photo of Abbey Road Coffee Shop, which has implemented a 10p surcharge for dairy in hot drinks.

“Abbey Road Coffee in Malvern isn’t vegan,” Vegan Food UK wrote. “But, it does make you pay an extra 10p if you choose to have cow’s milk in your tea or coffee.

“Abbey Road Coffee has also recently made ALL its cakes vegan! (And my Dad says they are delicious). This is the change we love to see!

“If cafés see that others are charging extra for dairy, then maybe others will follow.”

Vegan milks

Last month, acclaimed actor Alan Cumming urged Starbucks to ditch its vegan milk surcharge.

The coffee giant offers a range of plant-based milks but charges extra in some locations such as the US.

Cumming wrote a letter to Starbucks Canada Senior Vice President Lori Digulla. It reads: “More than a year ago, Starbucks acknowledged that cow’s milk is the company’s biggest source of carbon dioxide emissions.

“Yet it continues to penalize customers for making green and humane choices by charging them extra for vegan milk…

“If Starbucks really wants to help the planet, it must do more than just talk about its goals. It’s time to take action.”
