Bill Gates, former Microsoft Founder, and retired CEO says rich countries should move to plant-based beef. The billionaire has invested in plant-based brands Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods.

The tech entrepreneur and current CEO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation made the comment in a recent interview with MIT, introducing his new book: “How to Avoid a Climate Disaster”.

When asked whether plant-based and lab-grown meats could be the solution to the protein problem worldwide even in poor nations, he answered that for poorer countries we’ll need to use animal genetics to dramatically raise the amount of beef per emissions for them, but in the US is so productive that the emissions per pound of beef are dramatically less than emissions per pound in Africa.

“I do think all rich countries should move to 100% synthetic beef.”

Gates’ suggestion goes only for the richest countries to move to 100 percent synthetic beef.  Saying that we can get used to the taste difference, and says manufacturers are going to make it taste even better over time.

Gates’ book How To Avoid A Climate Disaster: The Solutions We Have and the Breakthroughs We Need will be on the shelves on February 16.

There he shares what he learned in over a decade of studying climate change with experts and investing in new concepts and innovations. Clearly and compellingly he hopes to explain to everybody the science behind the climate changes and finishes by proposing a plan on what needs to be done over the next decade and beyond to build the tools helping eliminate greenhouse gas emissions.
